The ruby laser is the first working model of a quantum generator. It was designed and launched in 1960 by Theodore Maiman at the Hughes Research Laboratory in Malibu, USA. A prerequisite for the creation of the laser was a series of theoretical and experimental studies on the spectral properties of ruby. Although some scientists, for example N.G. Basov, argued that the properties of ruby would not allow its use as an active element of the laser.
Nevertheless, a ruby laser was created and its ability to emit an intense, very narrow beam of red light of the same wavelength was demonstrated.
